The Great boredom

Hard work is a very nice cliché quote, being tossed around all the time like it explains something by itself. Hard work comes in all shapes, sizes and intensity. So, what is it and why boredom?

Getting bored means giving up

There is hard work done by one’s own will. Any other form of hard work is borderline slavery and it don’t produce the desired results in the long term. The thing is in developing self-discipline, for which sports is a great teacher.
There cannot be work positively done when something external imposes the will for it. No coach, teacher or boss can make us perform to our greatness if we ourselves don’t take responsibility for our own work ethic. You learn by all the years in practice, how to love what you do and be the judge of the way it is done. If you yourself are not satisfied, there is nothing a coach can say to make you feel as if you’ve done all you could.

Through self-effectiveness you learn how to work. It is one to want to work and a whole another thing to know how to work.
Quality and not duration is the key. An athlete can work out for one hour with maximum concentration and game-like intensity, and gain more than another who is working out for 3 hours, going easy, talking, joking, taking timeouts every 10 minutes and so on.
So hard work has everything to do with how you work and less with how long you work. When those two factors meet, it is perfection, given that the quality of the work doesn’t fall as duration grows.

So, what’s up with boredom?

The toughest part an athlete has to overcome are not the hours, the sweat, the injuries, the losses one faces. That is a byproduct of the choice.
The first major obstacle one faces is the boredom factor. Only those who stay motivated succeed.
It is not as normal as it sounds.

An athlete must be able to keep working no matter how boring the task one has to do. And boy, does it get boring… There are moves you have to do that are boring even to watch for a couple of times straight, and then you have to do them a million times. Every sport has those moments.
Think about the swimmer who just for warming up in practice, must swim for 5-10km. I remind you that an Olympic sized swimming pool is 50m in length. You do the math now of how many times they have to do it up and down while staring at blue tiles with a line in the middle. When that is over, they go on to do the day’s session.
Only when you overcome the will to give up because it is so boring a task, you get to the next more complicated level.
Then you get to have diversity because you have proven yourself and have attained some basic skills.

The first thing an athlete knows is that he is going to practice the same old move again. And again. But they are fine with that. It is the only way.
It is not easy to overcome the boredom, it is a skill learned and has everything to do with one’s level of consciousness. It is essential for work to be done the way it is supposed to.

That is the aspect of hard work that is not being addressed as often as it should.
Only when you prove that you cannot get bored doing it is when you switch to a higher level of skill.
