Self-efficacy

Not to be mistaken with self confidence.

We see some athletes excel in their sport, while others with equal skills achieve only mediocre performances. Also, it happens that an athlete can excel on one occasion only to perform badly on others. Why is that?
Albert Bandura‘s theory of self-efficacy may have some answers. As one facet of self-knowledge, personal efficacy allows a person to organize subskills into workable modes of action.

Those who are full of doubts may abandon their efforts at mastery early on. Not give it a try after the first tough obstacles. If a challenging task is attempted, the individual low in self-efficacy will likely expend less effort on the task.

Self-efficacy is not permanent, but rather situation-specific: a person may feel highly efficacious in one situation, but less in other circumstances. I am confident that I will not jump with a parachute from an aeroplane. But I might be efficient or even good at it, should I try it. Anyway, we will never know…
Self-efficacy underlies the successful performance of a full range of human endeavors including recreational activities and sports competition at all level.
Modern training methods and technology have produced pools of talent that are relatively homogeneous. The difference then between the first place and the others, comes down to a brief loss of concentration, a minor hesitation, a weak sense of self-efficacy. Capability alone does not guarantee an outstanding performance.

The athlete’s self-judgment regarding his or her capabilities is a determining factor mediating the talent of an individual and its enactment in formal competition.

Self-efficacy is one’s personal assessment of whether one possesses the skills to achieve a certain level of performance. So it is confined to the circumstance and not the self as a whole.
Occasional mild setbacks are important to the development of self-efficacy. Success that comes too easily does not equip one to cope with failure.
It is now common knowledge that there is an established relationship between self-efficacy and performance. There are theories being materialized on every court or field and even in the workplace.
The important factor for any performance in any field is how you approach the process, how have you been prepared mostly mentally.
